In this issue:
Donald's Vacation Adventures

Dear Friends,

Quiet week here on the homestead, as all the kids are elsewhere. Daughter is having a big time visiting her Aunt in the Big City where there are zoos, restaurants, parks and shopping galore... Son #2 is still at the mammoth Boy Scout Jamboree near Washington DC... and of course, Son #1 is out on his own, this week training for a local factory job. (Steady paycheck and interesting learning experience, to be sure. Does the learning EVER stop?).

It has been nice with just the two of us here at home this week. Nice... but... kinda weird with no kids around at all. I mean it is just a little TOO quiet. It's a taste of "empty nest", and I'm just glad the real thing is still a few years off. I don't think either one of us are anywhere near ready for it yet.

Meanwhile, I can't believe it...  but SCHOOL is starting back NEXT WEEK here in our county! The public schools around here have switched to a "year-round school" schedule, with shorter Summer breaks and longer Spring and Fall breaks.

Gee whiz...

Whatever happened to lazy, hot August days... where Summer seemed endless, and you eventually got tired of going swimming and fishing, mowing the lawn and playing ball, reading and exploring... and were actually READY to hit the books in September (AFTER Labor Day)?

I don't know... that's the way it seemed to me when I was growing up. But nowadays, most kids spend their summers in front of the TV, on the computer, or at the mall... and they really ARE ready to head back to school. Go figure.

As for me, I'd like Summer to keep on rolling along for a little while longer. August is too precious a commodity to burden down with schedules and lesson plans. So once we get the kids back home later this week (and they recover from their respective trips) we'll plan a few more summery things, and put school on hold a couple weeks longer.

I have a feeling they won't mind a bit.

Best Wishes,

The Erskine Family

OKAY... now onward to This Week's Program:

Donald's Vacation Adventures
"as written by Donald Duck, a very intelligent Duck"

Back in August of 1947, just after finishing the movie "Fun and Fancy Free", THE Donald was allowed to take an summer vacation too. Here's the story of his adventures, as told by the Duck himself. Guests on this show include Dinah Shore and Willie the Giant, both from the aforementioned movie. It also includes a neat interview with Clarence Nash, who was the "voice" of Donald for decades. This fun and unusual "audio cartoon" was originally broadcast on August 23, 1947 on the children's program NBC Story Shop. Warning: Younger kids will especially love this, and probably will want to hear it over and over -- but beware of the duet between Dinah Shore & Donald. Ouch!

READ THE INSTRUCTIONS below if you are unfamiliar with downloading a file or are having any problems with your download.

To download a program, RIGHT click (use the right hand button on your mouse) the link above, and "save target as" (or "save link as") to the directory of your choice.

The file should start downloading right away. If it doesn't, try it again, and follow these instructions carefully. (DON'T cut and paste this link into your web browser -- that will just PLAY the program over the internet (it will be jumpy and start & stop a lot), and will not DOWNLOAD the program. If you want to download it to your computer, you need to follow the above instructions.)

NOTE: If the file just starts playing over your computer right away, that's because you clicked the link with the LEFT hand button on your mouse. You need to click the RIGHT HAND button to download the whole show to your computer.

IF you right click the link and your computer does not allow you to "save target", you need to adjust your computer's security settings (or disable your "internet content advisor" settings) to allow downloaded files.

MAC USERS: In order to download these files, hold down the Control key then click the link with your mouse.  It will then download to the directory you choose.

If your download is unusually slow, it could be because our server is busy or overtaxed. You might try again at a later hour. It should - eventually - work fine.

This file will be available for the next week or two only, so don't put off downloading it if you want a copy.
